UCAA-UG was formed in 2017 by a group of faith-based leaders in Uganda. This was after the realization that LGBTI persons in Uganda are discriminated and castigated in faith based spaces using religion as a justification. The coalition which was therefore founded as a safe space for LGBTI faith leaders, affirming faith leaders and faith-based communities, seeks to empower the members of the coalition, and LGBTI persons and to advocate for respect of their rights using a faith based approach.

UCAA-UG marked 2 years in 2019. Since its inception, UCAA-UG, has secured a buy in and grown its membership to 12 LGBTI faith leaders, affirming faith leaders and faith-based communities, who have become LGBTI inclusive. Through partnerships, theological training and evidence based dialogue and advocacy, the coalition has contributed to influencing attitudes among faith based leaders who have become LGBTI friendly and their churches more inclusive to sexual minorities.

At the institutional level, the implementation of the programs has been punctuated by a number of institutional developments such as; the development of the five-year Strategic Plan (2019 -2023) -which is the first consolidated Strategic Plan in its history. The Coalition has an active Board of Directors in place, which among others has adopted and operationalized key organisational policies which guide operations of the coalition. Lastly, there is a gradual increase in the income being raised by the coalition, which is also a promising indicator of the increasing partnership portfolio.
